Lyrics:
He's just a young boy out of school hes very naughty
Living his world like he wants to
They're making laws, but they don't understand
Turns a boy in to a fighting man
They won't take me
They won't break me
#Journey #Escape #EscapeTour1981 #HD #Remastered
This song is a masterpiece. It’s not a rock song, it’s a rock symphony. The syncopation, the phrasing. It has two bridges that are both totally different and distinctive. Just incredible.
totally agree
And those contrapuntal backing vocals! That took some effort to arrange.
Absolutely flawless
Steve Perry is a masterpiece
@@j3dwin absolutely
Doesn't seeing performances like this make you miss how amazing concerts were in the 70's/80's. There will NEVER be another voice like Steve's again...ever.
Yes yes yes saw them last night with Cheap Trick and Def Leppard
Beyond my wildest dreams
Steve Perry is the voice of Journey! Irreplaceable. Best Vocalist ever.
Irreplaceable
Arnel Pineda said the same thing.
Of course! No two individuals are exactly the alike. It’s simple science And…common sense.
My all time favorite Journey song!
True!
No click, no autotune, just pure raw talent! That NEVER will be back again.
Forty years later Steve's singing is still be discussed and admired. No one comes close. Escape was a great album with the best musicians, writers and, of course, Steve Perry's soaring pure vocals!!!
Yess!!
Couldn’t agree more girl! Ross’ bass lines perfectly aligned with Steve’s double bass fills/playing style with Neal roaring over the top all playing Cain’s melodies. That lineup was amazing. They blew everyone away at Monsters of Rock 1983 in Orlando. Awesome show!
And that's a big AMEN!!!!!
Killer vocals, Killer band with supporting vocals, Schon, Smith, Vallory, Perry and Cain - no better example of a fine band of musicians, wow.
I could watch Journey video's all day every day. Never be a band like them again!! 😊
Steve's Voice is completely flawless in this concert...He is at the peak of perfection here! Gives me chills!!!!!!
Yes I agree, the Escape album was his vocal pinnacle.
Amen to that! The 1981 Houston concert was on FIRE - from what I've seen!
The God voice!
And he's sprinting around the stage while singing studio quality.
@@warptek and not even winded or out of breath! Amazing!
Steve Perry has an incredibly outstanding voice.
This song is the hidden gem off this album. The musicianship of the band is just incredible.
hidden in the name of the album "Escape" lol
In addition to his singing, his stage performance captivates the audience. Pure talent.
Yes he does.
Completely incredible
Every one of those guys on that stage was captivating and awesome
Yessssssss. Those tight jeans.....😊
EVERY SINGLE song that Steve belts out is PERFECTION!
Could you imagine as a singer to have to sing the entire Journey Escape tour once all the way through. Nevermind 285 times in one year.
Saw them at the Rose Bowl 7/2/82. They headlined. 2 giant video screens. Fireworks. AND 100 FRISBEES CAME OUT OF THE PRESSBOX UPSTAIRS! DONT FORGET THE GIANT FOOD FIGHT! 😊😊
To be able to run around like Steve does and still hit them notes just amazes me. ❤️🎵🎸🎶❤️ Love Steve!!
I know there are few singers that are stable throughout the concert but, I think Steve is the only vocalist(that I know) that is stable throughout the whole concert, even his running and jumpin’ around his voice is still *stable.*
No one can top Steve Perry.
*I will never get tired of complimenting Steve Perry*
Jonathan Cain said that when they were laying down the tracks for Escape that Steve sang "Mother, Father" in a single take. That's unheard of.
@@j3dwin I totally believe it… he has an amazing dynamic with his voice
Steve is just amazing!!!!
We who grew up with them, we simply had the best!
Yeah as a 2000s kid hearing their songs were epic
I've just discovered them they were not that big in the UK but I wish they were I would have been 1st in line now watching 24/7 addicted
Saw them at LA Forum in ‘79.
Amazing band.
Steve's voice is flawless...
Born 1964..graduated 1982 my #1 fav band of my lifetime...no one before or since has had a voice like Steve Perry
This was the soundtrack of our senior year. 82
I remember listening to this on cassette over and over on a Walkman that one of my high school buddies lent me my senior year (class of '82 as well). I eventually bought my own Walkman because of how great this album sounded.
Can we stop to appreciate how FUCKING amazing Steve was on the kit?!!!! Soooo damn underrated!!! 🥁💜. Now carry on folks…! DAYUM! I’m in awe!!
There aren't to many other bands that could sound this good live. Steve was entertaining and genuinely cared about giving the fans a good show. Steve, Ross, Jonathan and Neal were exemplary musicians behind Perry.
Can’t forget Steve Smith! Highly underrated drummer! Love him!
@@paulsciarretta2531 they loved performing for the fans . They are devoted musicians it just amazes me .
Steve Perry took Journey soaring with his writing, singing, showmanship. They would never had seen the heights they got to without him period...
Donna that is a pure fact no Steve Perry no journey
Steve Perry is timeless, amazing, irreplaceable, he is Journey, period.
That’s for sure
They were a decent band without him, but with him, they were pure magic.
@@chicken2jail545 but they weren't going anywhere, and we're going to be dropped, if they didn't change. A lot of people forget or don't even know there was briefly another lead singer before Steve.
You know, there's something really refreshing about a guy who can sing live, and a band who plays instruments behind him. Not a single computer in sight. And i'm an electronic music person!
Sanguis Rusticus well this was 1981 but yes you’re right!
Batphink...I won’t argue Steve Perry was a genius BUT my friend I’m sure you are just as good at your style of singing!! Steve is a Diamond in the Ruff and he was blessed to have the ability to reach the stars with those notes.
I love electric music too but there is something special about humans pouring everything they have into an instrument in chorus with others.
Batphink Reynolds well atleast you can sing...every darn dog in the neighborhood howls when I have my music playing, and I live in the country so my screeching as my son's say must be really bad to reach that far out lol!! Have a Very Merry Christmas, kerp writing, playing and singing its good for the soul😊👍🇨🇦
@@beachbum4166 my sentiments Exactly . Instruments can be easily duplicated but, the human instrument is a true gift of beauty.
Just incredible musicianship displayed here, and aren't they having fun?
They look like they are having so much fun .
Neal looks adorable .
How can Steve belt it out AND run around?? I'm winded just watching!!! :-) These guys were something else!
THX.....How true eh👍🏻 Wow what I would give to have even half the energy I had back in those days lol!!😴👋💕🇨🇦
Steve can run around and sing because he is a true talent not needing any computer help as some do today.
He didn't smoke. Lung capacity.
A real singer can do that, unlike the "entertainers" these days that lip sync but never sound out of breath. He also rarely talked to anyone on concert day, to conserve energy and his voice.
@Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast Perry was the reason that I wanted to have Cortez's. It took 3 decades, but I finally did, and they are still great shoes.
42 years later....and we're still here... and it's better than ever...
My mom didnt like me listening to journey. Now its her favorite group. Your welcome.
My mom was the same way, but my dad loved Steve Perry's voice!
Mine say they liked journey until they heard it for the 4 billionth time. I guess my obsession with it ruined it for them. Oops, but not sorry😎
My mom thought Steve Perry was gorgeous!! I had a very cool mom.
@@lh1168 I am that way about Don't Stop Believing. After hearing it hundreds of times at weddings, or people who weren't even born in the 80's singing it terribly @ Karaoke, it wears thin on ya. Still my favorite band, though.
Best version ever recorded of the song escape by Journey ever recorded bar non!!! Journey during this Tour was as good as it ever was in my opinion….. Long live Journey, tho my heart will always be with Steve and the band during this era….. John 58 years from Yucaipa California!!
I don not think there is any one in the catagory or level to be remotely close to say hands down Steve Perry is of the highest range that puts his ability match ed by no other male vocalist on this earth .
I was at this concert
It was incredible Steve put on an amazing show & I was mesmerized from beginning to end
Man, I was just a teenager... and I can't believe these guys are already in their 70s. Where the hell has forty freakin' years gone?
@@datatwo7405 yes where has time gone ?
Everyday I listen to this man sing and everyday is a new day that I am awestruck
I've always said that in 1981, Journey was in their prime!!! Classic Journey forever!! And by the way, my brother was at this concert!!! But I made up for it, in 1983. When Journey was in town (Houston, Tx) July 1,2,3 of 1983. My best friend and I went the 2nd and 3rd concert! Best nights of our young lives!!
Renee....oh WOW luck you, Im jealous!!👍
I caught 'em in Lexington, KY on that tour. It was awesome!
Chicago Rosemont Horizon escape and frontiers tours. They set the bar for live sound and production, and Perry was flawless! Even running around!
I was there for night 2 Houston 1983 too! Rocking in the Summit, LOL.
I’m jealous… I wasn’t even born when Steve Perry was still in Journey. What I would give to see Journey in concert with Steve Perry. 👍👍
This is their best song IMHO.
Hi everyone, I was so lucky to see the Escape Tour Live in 1982 15 rows from the stage . Being a musician, I was blown away, and this was long before the days of Auto Tune and Digital Sampling. Just incredible, live feel, emotion and musicianship that is so lacking today. To those who never saw this Tour and Journey in their Prime, too bad, words do not do justice to how great it was. Keep Rocking
Wow, you're so lucky to see this concert.
I wish I was born in this era
I saw them in Seattle, 1982. The best concert!
@samanthakimmanoban5035 I was 8 years old during this tour. The year after that we moved to Houston. I was close but, still too young!
I did see my first concert at that same venue .....still no cigar!!! I'll just add it to the list of the many bands I had no way to possibly go see. But I'll be a Duran Duran this year!
🥰🤗💝
Hartford 1981 arguably the best concert ever!
This has always been a favorite, it’s unique, powerful and perfect. No one could surpass Steve in his prime 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😘💕
No one else can't sound like Steve Perry! Steve Perry has his very own sound when he sung. No one can NEVER top Steve Perry!
Mac Chapman...your absolutely right on that!!💕👍🏻🇨🇦
Arnel Pineda!
@@richch689 Arnel Pa who??
Hats off to Arnel for sure. He’s got amazing talent. I respect him for that. Saw him front Journey live in ‘95 I believe, and he was amazing. However, he doesn’t have what Steve Perry had, if you listen closely, Arnel can’t reach Steve’s highs and I don’t blame him for that. My point: no one will EVER replace Steve Perry’s God given talent. He is Journey, period.
@@tichdaddy1 I completly agree with what you said about Steve Perry. Steve Perry is a one of a kind singer, that's for sure. He is the very BEST singer in the Classic Rock N' Roll buisness & in the whole wide world. Whenever I hear a Journey or a Steve Perry song on the radio I just turn up the volume & sing along, I just LOVE hearing Steve sing so very much! His my all time favorite singer, he could really sing. His vocal range is just amazing & out of this world. You know what? If I was a singer Steve Perry would be my one & only inspiration & influence.
Yes I'm gone. I'm goin'. Movin' on I'm leavin'. I'll be leavin' here today.
I love this album. This song is a unique.I love love The Babys and when Johnathan Cain came on....WOW.
Steve Smith is such a beast on the drums.
journey is my favorite band of all time
And I really appreciate that they aren't all drugged out like so many other bands fall victim to.
THX....thats the reason for Steve Perry taking the 1987 hiatus...in interviews he said that he was toasty, crispy around the edges because of the tour schedules, and the extra party favors, but you can tell up until the Raised on Radio tour he had only beer and wine running that blood and then the ROR tour you could tell he was ‘strung out’ on party favors, I believe this is around the time his Mother passed which took him for a loop, hit him hard!!! Love SP and the old Journey forever💕👍🏻🇨🇦
brady sherrod they're one of mine too! You've got great taste!
Journey ROCKS!
My favorite! Thank you for the memories Journey ❤🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Somebody tell me why.. I'm not getting tired of this every day 🎧❤️
Because they are friggin awesome like no other band.
Because this is art.
@@d.s.28 And THIS is how you open a show. Absolutely high energy.
I go back with myself at 58 and put this song onto my kids, neighbors, hell anyone who will listen and everyone is blown away by the musicianship and of course Steve during this era and tour… Journey at it’s absolute best…..
Steve Perry: Best voice - and best hair - in the business!!!!!
I loved his hair too
Every lip-synching / teenie bopper, auto tuned corporate marketed "singer" should watch this...Steve Perry, unbelievable....
Dude! I sure as hell could NOT have come close to saying that better myself!!
The problem is, they just not care. They think their electronic dance music is better. Most dont appreciate this. Some do so I would introduce them to it, but most of the young (I'd say 30 and under) just dont care about anything from less than about a year or 2 ago. Oh well, we can enjoy it.
All three of you have hit that nail dead center!!!! THIS IS REAL MUSIC AND TALENT!!!!
@@joannspencer1094 here's a thought to ponder:what do you think of this? At 48 years old, and actually since I was in my teens, I could listen to Elvis, the Beatles, heck even back to Glenn Miller and like all of it even though it was before my time. I even respect music I dont like such as choir. Yet the younger crowd in general doesn't afford anything the same respect, simply dismissing it as old with no further explanation. Glenn Miller has been old my whole life but I like him. Like I said I dont like choir music but I can at least recognize it. What changed with "youth"? Again there are exceptions but in general.
Tom Paul...funny you should use the two words ‘respect’ & ‘youth’ in the same statement! Lol, the youth of today do not show anything nor anybody respect most of the time unless your in the same ring! They don’t even respect their own families!! Do you remember when you went to visit your Uncles and Aunts you would get a lecture if you forgot to use Uncle/Aunt when saying hello or goodbye, and your friends parents were always Mr/Mrs! Nothing like that at all in this day and age, very sad to say! I would always correct my 2 boys growing up if they did not address someone respectfully, they are late 20’s and still use the same address to people, I’m glad I kept on their backs. Have an awesome week 👍🏻🇨🇦
Steve IS a masterpiece!
GOAT!
Steve can sangggg!!!!! . Amazing musicians. They stayed in AND on key. Amazing!!!
I'm 34. My mom was 21 and went to this. She's made sure I've been a fan my entire life. Even though I'm a 90s child, this band is legendary always.
That's called " singing your heart out". So much talent on one stage.
So effortless... Stevie you ROCK!
So much pleasure listening and watching Steve live so relaxed doing it😍
They sound just as good as The 'Escape' Album. Incredible.
Man they put it all together here....
Best group ever. This line up of people were the best.
For those people that in this concert, you all are the *actual lucky people.*
I/We won't ever experience a concert like this now.
WOW, SAW THEM MANY TIMES AND STEVE PERRY JUST TURNED EVERYTHING ELECTRIC. HE WAS BORN TO DO WHAT HE DID AND I HOPE TO AGAIN SEE HIM PERFORM. HE IS MISSED. THIS IS WHEN JOURNEY WAS THE REAL THING.
YES!!!!!!!!!💕👍🏻🇨🇦
I SEE YOU'RE PEOPLE OF CAPITAL LETTERS AS WELL.
"HE WAS BORN TO DO WHAT HE DID" - It can not be described better!
Meme Dude and your point is???
@@TalnsScar STEVE PERRY GETS US EXCITED AND WE WANT TO YELL!!! ;)
Bei Journey MIT Steve Perry bekomme ich auch heute noch Gänsehaut.Perfektion pur !!!
Steve’s confidence glow up compared to his first performance singing ‘Patiently.’ He’s not gripping onto a microphone for dear life, he’s having the time of his life, preforming in front of thousands.
Perry at the pinnacle of perfection in every sense of the word.
Best song of all time, Brian May is a personal friend and he could not praise Steve Perry enough enough please sing it one more time time with journey
I was there on the 3rd row...scalped UT vs UofH football tickets the day before and made $800 and bought good seats for this concert. Funny I remembered Steve Perry in a leopard skin jacket...obviously not (guess it was his shirt?, or my drinking ;-)....but I do remember them debuting "Don't Stop Believing"...a song that still stops all the conversations in bars and sends everyone to the dance floor even today. Great memories. Love Journey!
Steve Perry....The STAR MAKER of JOURNEY......History maker of music that we love over forty years later. The GOAT.....Journey was lucky to have him on their side. So much talent in that sexy body.....Thanks Steve ❤
Steve Perry was journey.....they are nothing now.....Steve Perry is the best..they can't get a hit without him
My favorite Journey song. Ultimate rock piano, drums, guitar, and of course, vocals. They peaked with this song.
Instrument-wise, I preferred Queen. Voice- Steve Perry.
Undoubtedly one of the top 3 rock vocalists of all time…!!!
This guy can run all around & still hit every note. Not off not out of breath. He hits every octave . Incredible. Can only think of one other on his level & that’s Freddie Mercury from Queen.
Agreed! I do have to give a shoutout to Dennis Dee Young though, he’s got an incredible voice as well.
Robert Plant, Steven Tyler too :)
My list in this order...
Steve Perry
Freddie Mercury
Ann Wilson
Paul Rodgers, Bad Company. Quintessential rock voice and front man. From that era I would say Steve Perry, Paul Rodgers, and Ann Wilson (Heart) were pure power voices/singers. Freddy Mercury hit his peak in the late 70's, but yeah give him credit for Live Aid in 85.
How many times can I like this reply??
I have been playing Steve's songs daily. I have been downloading all his videos. I always loves don't stop believing which I saw a video off Steve. It is now my ringtone before all these Journey songs started playing on Utube. I loved many of the songs which I didn't know was played by them. I'm totally in love with Steve again. Brilliant fantastic voice. Nobody like him again ever again. ❤❤
Bring back the 80's! 💜
He's so very talented!
People don't realize that Steve doesn't stand in front of monitors to sing. His pitch is ALWAYS right on and this was way before in-ear monitors. He's running around and is always on key. Sure, they had side fill monitors but when you can't hear yourself on stage it's very hard to stay in pitch. Truly one of the best frontmen in rock. I've seen them many times and Steve has been my favorite ever since the first time I saw them. Miss Steve immensely.
4:11 gives me nostalgic 80s goosebumps to a simpler time . I just love Schons harmonic Guitar solos . He’s one in a million a long with Perry 💯👌🏼
Thank you for recognizing Schon. I love Perry but Journey without Schon wouldn't work. His solos are beautiful, especially this one.
@@dunlop9161 His phrasing is impeccable. Neil's the only guitarist I know whose solos are as memorable as the song's vocal chorus. And he is well -respected by other musicians across a variety of genres.
It reminds me of F1 races.
@@j3dwin I completely agree with you.
Oh my goodness 😳 😍 😭 ❤❤❤❤
Wish I could turn back those best times of my life!
The song breaks at 2:31 and from that moment on, is a masterpiece.
That section is just amazing - maybe my favorite Steve Perry vocal
Seriously, no one is better than Steve Perry!!! Loved him my entire life. I was only 11 but I was 💯 a Steve Perry fan. I would listen to this music and stress would disappear!! ❤️😘🤗
This song will bring world piece if played all over the world daily!
Not sure if my neighbors like this song as much as I do, but they listen to it every day none the less.
Escape album cover art is phenomenal.🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
If there was a Mount Rushmore of vocalists, Steve Perry would occupy 2 of those spots. He is that good. When in doubt listen to this song again. Pure vocal God.
Arnel has never matched a performance like this !
This was an awesome time to enjoy concerts in the 80's, So many great bands touring with Journey being my favorite..loved this concert at the Summit in Houston
MY FAV. Journey song!
Whenever Steve raises his arm up in the air, you know the glass is going to shatter.
YASSSS!!! 🙌
Aber sowas von 💖
Mom, thank you for raising me with this music and thank you for purposely not finding a sitter and taking me to Pine Knob in the summer of 81 to see Journey, I don't remember to much of the concert, but I do remember you picking me up and singing this song.💞
Stay home stay safe mom,
You are all I got left from my past.
Great musicianship in this band.
Love this song and the man that sings it ❤️💕💗😍🥰😘
To sing like that song after song, night after night, that's a toll on the vocal instrument unlike other instruments. Then he often was always running on stage still doing that. Superman I tell you.. And people may judge as stuck-up for not doing interviews, but not speaking at times was the only way to survive. His rough, but still beautiful, voice today is surely a sign of how hard he gave to fans. Just amazing. Would love to see him do his drums too.
I just can't tell you just how much THIS makes me smile!!!
Classic Journey FOREVER!!!
@Steveperry- ....... faker!!!!!
@Steveperry- ..... you ARE NOT the REAL Steve Perry!!!
I've been a Perry fan far too long, to know the REAL from the fake!! I'm on his all his social media pages.
As soon as Perry started his social media, fakers like you came out of the woodwork!
STOP PREYING ON PERRY'S FANS!!
If was there, I would *LITERALLY SCREAM* my heart out
I love this song so much
This is my favorite Journey song.
I saw them during this tour here in Phoenix. Amazing show! And Steve Perry was absolutely perfect the entire show.
This takes me back to the days of my 16 y/o self cruising around town with "Escape" (on cassette ... from Columbia House) blasting through the speakers on my parent's car (when they'd let me borrow it). A truly wonderful time, so unappreciated because we were in a hurry to grow up.
This is the voice of Journey
I never knew who Journey was before Steve!!!👏🎸👏🎸👏🎸👏🎸👏🎸👏
GREATEST VOICE OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blessed to see you perform in Atlanta last night. Wow! All I can say is, WOW!!!
NO DOUBT....100% ALL LIVE, when they performed it was an unmatched art form...
04:11 - 04:40 That guitar absolutely sings. Also, the drumbeat on the entire song just kicks it. The whole song was so well put together and played!
O cantor Steve Perry e Luso Americano. Familia de Ilha Acores

"Escape" and "Frontiers" are two of the best Cain era songs
...THE Fab Five right here!...my, my...
My favorite Journey song of all time!
This concert should be in every home in their DVD player
What’s great about this tour is that you got some (what would now be considered) deep cuts. Someone has uploaded the entire concert, do yourself a favor and find it!
Always impressed by Machine-gun Smith's drumming, precision and power. Utterly rock solid musicians. Escape is the band's opus. Used to wear a musical note pendant to emulate Perry. Signature voice in the same category as Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald. Sucks that they couldn't figure out how to keep it going.
I agree! Journey isn't the same without Perry in it
Steve Smith didn’t deserve to be kicked from the band
